Gauteng (meaning place of gold in the Sotho language) is home to Soweto, Johannesburg and Pretoria, three of Africa’s great cities. Gauteng embraces a cosmopolitan blend of people from the four corners of the globe who have created a unique cultural legacy. This is evidenced in Gauteng’s many excellent museums, theatres, art galleries, cultural precincts and craft markets, and in its non stop rhythm, movement and style. |
Gauteng province was created by the ANC in 1994 after the country’s first all-race elections. It united six regions, including part of the old Transvaal province, into South Africa’s smallest but most vibrant province. |
The region’s history lies embedded in the discovery of gold. But today Gauteng’s great infrastructure allows its population of over 9 million people to interact with an energy that has turned Gauteng into it one of the wealthiest provinces in Africa, and made it the entertainment centre of the country. |

The sheer energy of this Highveld enclave, blessed with intense summers broken only by intermittent electric storms, is echoed in the buzz of the place. Here, people walk fast, talk fast, and drive fast. But there is more to Gauteng than speed. There is a charm and a uniqueness that is in a constant state of change as the South African traveller moves around this province. |
The Vaal Triangle is one of the largest industrial regions in the southern hemisphere and vibrant, exciting Johannesburg is the hub around which it spins. This pulsating provincial capital offers South African tourists an outsized selection of recreational, cultural and historical attractions. |
